Description

The legend that is the Subaru Impreza. In their lifetime, what serious car nut hasn’t at some point dreamt of owning one? Think of the WRX and STi versions and then you really start to salivate. Add Prodrive into the mix and you are really talking. Well, here is a fantastic opportunity to own not just a Prodrive Impreza, but a limited edition Prodrive Impreza; number 286 of the Limited Edition GB270.

This GB270 is the last of the ‘classic’ Imprezas, unfortunately they came to be replaced by a very different hatchback model. The GB270, a name apparently combining a reference to Subaru’s most successful WRC event – Rally GB – with the power output of the Prodrive-tweaked 2.5-litre engine.

Number 286 comes to market via our vendor, a self-proclaimed Impreza nut. This being his third GB270 Impreza after having previously owned a couple for many years, he finds himself having a change of circumstances and knows that this example is just too good to become a commuter vehicle.

Supplied with all the manuals and a fully stamped service book along with a second book with up-to-date stamps, you will be bidding on a full service history example. Add to that the standard engine rebuild, invoiced at £5,264 in 2021.

Not a bad example I hear you saying to yourself.

*Please note, the current number plate G8 DSB will be removed prior to the sale and an age-related plate will be allocated to the Subaru – expected to be SW57 DFO*

Outside

Moving on to the aesthetics of the car, you will see the special edition parts that make it abundantly clear this is no ordinary Impreza. Okay, the Blue Mica paintwork is an obvious giveaway, but the extras listed below will give a massive nod to those that are “In the Know” about these fantastic cars.

  • 18inch Prodrive GT1 Silver Alloys
  • Rear Bumper Lip
  • Rear Wing (Boot Spoiler)
  • 30mm and 10mm lowered front and rear

The eagle eyed among you will spot that there are some tiny stone chips on the front of the car and there is a small dent to the nearside front wing by the repeater lamp. Our vendor will have that professionally removed by a paintless dent removal specialist prior to sale.

Apart from that, the paintwork is believed to be totally original with no other marks, dents or scratches. The underside has been undersealed so is just as well presented and the wheels have no unsightly scuffs or scrapes.

All in all, a very well-presented example. What would you expect from a Subaru nut?

Inside

Much the same as the outside, we have a super example of the GB270 interior. The first thing to note is the ID Badge, number 286, sitting proudly on the centre console. If you hadn’t already noticed the GB270 emblem on the upgraded (to the tune of £1,600) black leather seats, then that alone would alert you to the fact you have just lowered yourself into a very special edition of these legendary cars.

Speaking of the black leather seats, these are still in fantastic condition with none of the usual bolster wear. The carpets are protected by over mats so are in great condition, the door pads are just as good, and the headlining is as it should be.

Everything else from the Special edition Momo gear knob to the three spoke steering wheel have all survived the test of time and look great.

Everything is completely standard and as it came out of the factory with the exception of the Kenwood DAB stereo unit. A very useful upgrade and one that almost every Subaru owner chooses to do.

Move into the boot and you will find a very tidy carpeted area housing the spare wheel and toolkit which are still in place.

Mechanicals

It would be criminal not to start this section with the legendary flat boxer engine so guess what? We have.

Most have lost count of how many rallies the Subaru Impreza won during its heyday, whatever the number it is pretty impressive. Much like the numbers produced from a standard Impreza engine, add to those figures the Prodrive upgrades and you have a seriously quick motor.

The Prodrive Performance Pack added to the 2.5 litre flat four takes the power up from 227bhp to the aforementioned 270 PS – or 266bhp at 5700rpm. More importantly it bolsters the torque by a huge 74lb ft, swelling it to 310lb ft at 3000rpm. That’s 21lb ft more than an STI and 15lb ft more than a V8 M3… Seriously quick numbers.

With all that power you would be right to wonder how well it has been looked after and as mentioned previously, it has been well looked after indeed.

Firstly, our current vendor is a mechanic by trade and knows these Subarus inside out and even before all that, he did his research before purchasing this fine example. Choosing this particular car was not only swung by its special edition status and original condition, but also the fact that the renowned Subaru specialists, AEM, had recently rebuilt the engine to the tune of over £5,000.

There is also the fact that the car comes with a full service history. At the end of 2023 the car had its big service which included the gearbox and differential service.

What more could you ask for.

  • Full, AEM, engine rebuild in 2021
  • Full service history
  • Full service in late 2023 “The Big One”
  • A brand-new MOT will also come with the car

Lastly our vendor has shared that the exhaust has been upgraded to a full stainless-steel option.

Our View

For those of you that have driven or owned a WRX Impreza, we salute you. For those that haven’t, well what are you waiting for? They are just sublime road cars that were developed on the rally course, sprinkle some Prodrive in the mix and from the time the engine fires up to the first click of that short shift gearchange your heart will be racing. Everything beyond that is just a whoosh of adrenalin as you experience one of the finest handling road cars to have ever graced our streets.

Find one this good, and virtually standard, in a world of tacky blue pipes and oversized turbos, then you surely must be ready to scratch that itch.

Don’t stand on ceremony though, we expect this to get snapped up quite quickly as you just do not find them this good.

A very special limited edition Impreza indeed.

Vehicle Location: Lincolnshire, NG34 – it’s the responsibility of the winning bidder to make collection / transportation arrangements directly with the vendors.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So, we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at team@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to get back to you, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important, and we are here to help and answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images, please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
