Background

The only owner of this superb Harley-Davidson passed away recently, unexpectedly and abruptly. Our vendor Nick stepped up and paid the owner’s family what he paid for it. He simply wants to move it on.

Exterior

In factory option Vivid Black, this H-D is fashioned around the notion of a stripped-back-to-basic Harley Sportster 1200. This results in the Roadster having a super cool attitude. Harley’s ‘Dark Custom’ vibe means there is a blacked-out engine, black paint everywhere, black forks,  cut-down black mudguards and all-new cast spoke wheels. It looks stunning. In our view one of the purest, best-looking Harley Sportsters in all its 60-year history.

With twin front discs, a sporty riding position and those fat 43mm upside down front forks it’s the sportiest Sportster yet.

The distinctive ‘Peanut’ fuel tank is there. There’s a beautifully sculptured single-style seat, which will actually accommodate a pillion. Continuing the sporty café racer theme, the foot-pegs are more rear-ward intonated, chopped down front and rear mudguards, and a neat, multi-function single tacho dial which incorporates a digital speedo.

Engine and gearbox

The XL1200 CX, air-cooled, pushrod Evolution V-twin is had its capacity bumped by 30% The effect on power is obvious The quaking Milwaukee lump now puts out nearly 70bhp and 73ftlbs of torque

This gives it much more drive out of the corners. When out for a fun ride, you can just leave it in third gear and ride everywhere on a wave of torque. Being honest, that’s the most enjoyable way to ride it anyway.

The five-speed gearbox has a long, positive throw. You always know the bike has shifted. Final drive is by Harley’s usual, superb and largely maintenance-free, belt system. No more oily chains.

Ride

The 19″ rear & 18″ front wheel give the bike sweet steering in traffic. The bars are swept low and wide, giving it a semi-sporty riding position but easy to live with too.

In town it’s great. It’s out of town where the Roadster comes alive. It handles well. You can feel those fat upside down forks working giving great feedback from the front tyre.

The bike’s pegs will touch down, eventually, which is great fun. But it goes round corners well. It’s a joy to steer, which it does quickly and precisely. The ride is more sophisticated than any previous Sportster and the brakes are so good too. It’s as if Harley has finally discovered how good modern brakes can be.

Accessories

The shopping list from Harley is wateringly attractive.

This one was spec’d brilliantly. The Screaming Eagle Super Tuner allows all sorts of variations and option. The high flow air filter is a must and will aid whatever state of tune you want.

Then there are those thunderous pipes. Words don’t often fail us. But take a listen to the video.

And if the Screaming Eagle accessories weren’t enough, our vendor is kindly including a garage turntable plus a H-D  branded back pack too. We’re also told that the the brand new original exhaust no plate assy will also come with the bike.

Summary

When H-D thought about the XL1200 Roadster they set out to make it the sportiest Harley Sportster 1200 yet – and succeeded.

Now add to that how good it looks. It rides, stops and handles even better and yet they’ve not managed to lose the traditional Harley experience that sets the American brand apart.

It’s good in the bends, has enough grunt out of them and the brakes work as they should. It reminds us of a kind of Harley version of the old Thruxton.

The whole experience makes you feel good, chugging along using the torque of the 1200 engine, and taking in the view. It’s one of those bikes that gets better and better, the more you ride it.

As an easy, jump on, ride, blast and have some very convenient affordable fun, it is hard to beat.
