Precise handling, superb engine, light weight, powerful brakes and legendary Honda reliability. The 2018 Honda CRF250R is an incredible bike. Unquestionably the best 250 four-stroke motocross bike ever produced.

To celebrate probably the best British motocross rider ever, in 2018 Honda produced a small run of Dave Thorpe Replica bikes of the all new 2018 CRF250.

Early on in his career, Dave Thorpe saw success with the factory Kawasaki Team. Thorpe signed to the Honda factory racing team in 1983. He won regular Grand Prix in 1984, taking his first world title in 1985. Following epic battles with his factory teammate, Thorpe won his second title in 1986, Injuries prevented him from racing competitively in 1987 and ’88. A thrilling return to form in 1989 saw Thorpe win his record breaking third title. Dave Thorpe remains the last British rider to have won the premier division of the motocross world championships.

Overview

The Honda CRF250R has seen plenty of changes since the bike’s inception in 2004. The 2018 model stepped up again. The most significant is the new double overhead cam (DOHC) engine. This was the first time Honda moved away from the single overhead cam (SOHC).

The CRF250R has a Showa 49mm A-Kit-style spring fork. For 2018 it came with a new frame, downdraft intake, titanium fuel tank, and bodywork.

The new engine features two entirely separate exhaust systems from port to rear silencer.

The changes Honda made to the bike are immediately noticeable. The power delivery is much stronger than the previous-generation bike on the top-end.

The throttle response is extremely sharp, which despite the smooth bottom-end power, helps powering out of soft corners. Hondas have always been praised for a smooth shifting box, the clutch is easy and smooth.

The Honda has three switchable ride modes. The first mode is standard factory setting. Mode two has had great top-end with a torquey bottom-end. Mode three is described by our vendor as “turning the bike into a proper weapon!”

The new Showa 49mm suspension offers a good balance between comfort and performance.

The Honda feels incredibly light and nimble. The new frame plays a major role in that.

The swingarm is a little shorter than the past models, which aids traction in every area. With the seat a little flatter, it makes it easy to move around on the bike. The brakes are strong and progressive without being spiky.

Summary

The all-new engine revs to the moon and back and of course loves to be screamed about. The Showa suspension is easy to dial in with just a few clicks. The new chassis makes the bike feel lighter and more agile than ever before. With more bottom-end power, this bike is one of the most well-rounded 250 four-stroke motocross bikes ever produced. The electric start is a major benefit. Then there are the rider modes! A great bike. Great value. Great opportunity. And the reserve is right.
