Description

1973 marked the start of the Watergate hearings in the U.S. Senate, ending the career of President Richard M. Nixon. Notable that year was the beginning of an oil embargo, which led to fuel shortages across the globe. It was hardly the best time in history to launch a water toy that burned gasoline. Kawasaki management grabbed a handful of bravery pills and did just that with its Jet Ski. It was a product that created a market where none existed before, and that is still around to this day.

The first Jet Ski was a stand-up only model with a 400cc two-stroke engine, articulating handlebars and a trigger throttle. Hand-built in Akashi, Japan, it wasn’t easy to ride, but it was something new to get people out on the water and it made a big splash.

About the time Margaret Thatcher was elected Prime Minister, Kawasaki began mass-producing the Jet Ski 400. The same year “Jet Ski” became a registered trademark of Kawasaki.

Numerous trademark battles led to the creation of the catchy term “personal watercraft,” or PWC for short.

Things were moving at pace now. By 1980, Jet Ski racing became its own sport, going global with the International Jet Ski Boating Association. But the market for the stand-up watercraft wasn’t limitless. Kawasaki knew that new products would reinvigorate sales and in 1986, Kawasaki released the new X2, a two-person hybrid jet ski that gave riders the option to either sit or stand.

  • Kawasaki X2 650
  • 650cc 2-Stroke Engine
  • Trailer
  • Cover
  • Adjustable handlebars
  • Largely standard
  • Clamp-on on outriggers/pontoons
  • These make the ski much more stable for less experienced riders or when carrying a passenger
  • Hydro mats

Our vendor says: “It comes with detachable floats, cover and trailer with trailer board and lights.” He has also let us know that there is a small scrape to the underside; likely caused from the Jet Ski being launched from a shingle beach.

Summary

An easy, cheap, way to get out on the water this Summer. These later jet skis are much more like motorbikes on water. With the clamp-on outriggers this one is suitable for those less adventurous or new to the sport. Or they can easily be removed and wheyey hay… Great fun. Sensibly reserved.

Vehicle Location: Braintree, Essex CM7 – it’s the responsibility of the winning bidder to make collection / transportation arrangements directly with the vendors.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So, we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at team@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to get back to you, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important, and we are here to help and answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images, please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
