In a one-off event on September 12 2021, Brooklands Motor Museum is holding a special tribute to their former President Sir Stirling Moss OBE who passed away in April 2020.
The Lotus 18, the car for which Moss will be most remembered taking a stunning victory at Monaco, and is sure to be a big crowd pleaser.
If we get a chance, we’ll get up close to the classic Ferguson P99 raced by Moss for the Rob Walker Racing Team. The classic F1 car was built and developed by Ferguson Research Ltd. They utilised the highly successful classic Climax engine but in a breath-taking move they mated it to a developmental four-wheel drive system.
The cars first race was in 1961. It didn’t have a great start to be fair. Driven by Jack Fairman the classic racer crashed on Lap 2. The team were not put off. The classic P99’s immortal event was just around the corner when Moss clambered behind the wheel at Oulton Park. Blowing the doors off the competition he took the chequered flag. It proved to be the first and only time a 4wd car had won a F1 race. Another amazing record by Moss which still stands today.
We’re advised by the team at Brooklands that other Moss classic competition racers confirmed are;
1954 OSCA; 1958 Vanwall F1; 1951 HWM F2; 1957 Leyland Royal Tiger Vanwall Transporter;
1959 Cooper Monaco; 1960 Walker-Climax and 1961 Ferrari 250GT. All of them simply stunning classic cars.
The event is not a static gaze and gawp event tho. There will be live demonstrations along the finishing straight, pit lane interviews and the commentary will be taken care of by Simon Taylor. Oh, there will also be some Sixties music. What is not to like!
