“The MG TD can rightfully be described as the most popular of all the T series Midgets”. That is according to the MG Owners’ Club; they should know.

The 1950 launch of the MG TD saw some major advances. Despite remaining a quintessentially classic British sports car, much had been upgraded. The MG TD was longer and wider. Top speed was increased thanks to a 1250cc engine. The handling upgrades provided the greatest improvement. The MG TD was an instant hit.

Background

New manufacturing techniques allowed the factory to offer LHD models for the first time. The launch of the MG TD coincided with Britain devaluing the pound. The American market could not get enough MG TDs.

  • Year of manufacture: 1951
  • Chassis No: TD5735
  • Engine No: LHX6144
  • Originally an export vehicle to the US – our vendor thinks California
  • Registered in the UK 26th May 2010
  • Professionally reverted to RHD by a specialist in Yorkshire
  • At that time, it is believed the TD had an exterior refurb
  • Owned by our vendor since 2011. Our vendor is the second UK owner. He has carried out additional work to the MG, unfortunately the invoices for the work have been misplaced.
  • Current V5

Outside

Shiny, immaculately restored classics are lovely to see. But we all know there is something even more appealing about a classic like an MG TD that is proudly wearing its age and maturity.

This MG looks really bonny from 20 yards away, because it is. When you get eye-ball close, you’ll see it’s vintage. Numerous images in our Galleries explain what we are talking about.

The TD body was four inches wider, giving more elbow room, and five inches longer. Major external styling changes were also introduced. Every panel was different to that of the previous MG TC. The classic coach-built body, separate flowing front wings, running boards, large headlamps and the characteristic vertical slat MG radiator approach, were all retained. A centrally hinged bonnet and those cutaway doors complete the look.

  • The chrome is generally in decent condition, whilst the ageing process is clearly apparent on some parts
  • A helpful hood and side screens are present and in good condition
  • Boot mounted spare wheel
  • Chrome luggage rack
  • Spot lamp and badge bar

Inside

The MG TD fascia design was new but followed a strictly traditional style. In the cockpit, amenities were restricted to British sports car driving essentials.

  • Green leather
  • Two-seater
  • Leather door cards
  • Wooden steering wheel
  • MG centre push
  • Classic white clocks with black numerals

All of it is in good condition. Simple, functional, fun. What more do you need?

Mechanicals

MG enthusiasts were astonished to also see cost-cutting meant the abandonment of the traditional wire wheels in favour of 15-inch press steel wheels. It is great to see this MG TD sporting wires again.

  • The 1250cc engine was reconditioned during our vendor’s ownership
  • That work was carried out by the well-known Naylors of Bradford
  • Travelled around 2,000 miles in 12 years
  • When not in use, the MG TD is dry stored on trickle charge
  • Same tyres from 12 years ago
  • Five speed gearbox
  • Good oil pressure when running
  • Rev counter isn’t currently working but will be for the new owner
  • MOT will take place shortly but has been impacted by recent poor weather conditions! our description will be updated accordingly
  • The car will have an engine oil and filter change along with a basic service after the MOT

The XPAG/TD engine was derived from the Y type XPAG/SC engine. The TD version had the clutch housing, dynamo, sump, rocker cover, starter motor and engine mounts all from the Y type.

  • 1250cc four-cylinder engine
  • BHP: 54.4 @ 5,200rpm
  • Torque: 64.5lb/ft @ 2,600rpm
  • Twin 1 1/2″ SU carbs
  • Independent front suspension by coil and wishbone.
  • Semi-elliptical leaf springs with Luvax-Girling shock absorbers on the rear
  • Lockheed hydraulic brakes

Summary

We think the MG Owners’ Club are correct; these are smashing cars and have an evergreen appeal. The TD is arguably the best of the T-models. They have improved comfort, handling and performance but retain the classic charisma.

Lively, fun and frugal. The MG TDs are hugely enjoyable classic British sports cars. This one is ready to use, show and enjoy. Go on. You know you want to.
