First introduced in 1953, the 210 series found a balance in the market for Chevy buyers. More affordable than the chrome laden Bel Air but offering more luxury than the 150. They were offered in a wide range of body styles including convertible, sport coupe hardtop, two and four door sedans and four door station wagons. Coveted worldwide by enthusiasts of the Tri Five Chevrolets, the ’56 210 continues to be one of the most popular years for collectors and hot rodders.

As you can see, the Chevrolet 210 we have here is in need of some tinkering! Our vendor has been ‘getting round to fixing it up’ for quite a few years now and finally realised that it’s probably never going to happen. We will leave you with the vendor, John, to tell you all about this rarity.

“I’m not going to call it a barn find, as it was never lost! But it has spent 22 years with me in dry storage, surviving a divorce and a house move. From the photos, you can see that the car needs quite a bit of bodywork as it’s pretty rusty. Just before I got it, it was taken back to bare metal, filled with copious amounts of body filler and resprayed in non-original two tone blue and white Ford colours. There’s a hole in the front floor, various holes in the inner sills and rust elsewhere.

The heavy chassis has surface rust but no structural issues at all.

The Chevy came to the UK brand new in 1956, and still bears the original London issued registration, SXN 909. It’s a factory Right Hand Drive – built at the Tarrytown New York plant. It has a proper RHD setup, proper RHD steering box, no chains or other weird setups. I fitted new ball bearings to the steering box along with “poor man’s power steering” – for a smoother, more modern drive.

When new, it was fitted with the Chevrolet Blue Flame straight six 235 cubic inch (about 3.8 litre) engine and a manual 3 speed column shift (three on the tree). At some point the engine’s been changed for an (almost) period correct 283 cubic inch V8 (from some time in the 1960s) and a 2 speed powerglide auto transmission. It could have had (but didn’t) these from the factory so it’s pretty original apart from the 1970s Ford floor mounted gearshift. It has a decent mild steel twin exhaust which isn’t loud but sounds nice.

The car is pretty complete, apart from some rust holes and it being partially dismantled. It will roll and would run if the carb was refitted and a throttle cable rigged up.

The handbrake works, and the drum brakes were renewed (wheel cylinders and linings) during my ownership.

Front and rear screens have been removed but are intact and included – laminated front.

The interior items such as door cards are present but very scruffy. The seats are complete and are decent having been recovered over 20 years ago and then not used.

There are some used and new old stock parts included including a new cloth headlining, chrome front parking light surrounds and two spare doors from a 1957 (slightly different wheel arch cutout) in better condition than the fitted originals.

The front wings are present and in decent condition – a little rust and filler but useable and finished in the same blue/white as the rest of the car

There is also a rear shock absorber frame that can be welded into the rear chassis to replace the weaker body mounts for the top of the rear shocks.

During my 22 year ownership various people, including previous owners, have been kind enough to send me pictures of the Chevy in its heyday. Originally finished in Matador Red and India Ivory – it’s photographic history shows that the red and white were reversed at different stages of its life, as well as at some point being all white and two tone yellow and white”

Our view

This 1956 Chevrolet 210 has been waiting 22 years for someone to look beyond its resting state and see its potential. With a little time, patience and love, the 210 could undoubtably be the Tri Five star of next year’s show season.

Very sensibly reserved in order to find it’s saviour! Could that be you?!

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at auction@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to ring you back and discuss, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important and we are here to help and also answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
