Description

Our recent system upgrade means a few changes to the way in which you bid, please familiarise yourself with these changes by having a read of our FAQs

The BSA Gold Star DBD34 Clubmans. Many think this is the best BSA ever built. Many don’t need to think about it, they just know. The BSA Gold Star was not only the most successful motorcycle throughout the manufacturer’s history, but one of the most successful British motorcycles of all time, both on and off the track. The Gold Star eventually became more recognised than the BSA brand itself.

In the pre-war years, BSA created a solid line of motorcycles. The 500cc Empire Star arrived in 1937. When Wal Handley came out of retirement and lapped the Brooklands racetrack at over 100 mph average speed, he was awarded a Gold Star. The name stuck.

The Gold Star is the most sought-after Clubmans version, so named due to the Gold Stars domination of the Clubmans TT, among other numerous competitions.  Due to it being one of the quickest bikes in its day it is still capable of keeping up with today’s traffic.

In fantastic condition due to a considerable amount of money being spent on it during the restoration, not only does it look fantastic, but it also rides extremely well with mechanical improvements including an electric start, a rebore in 2020 and an RRT2 gearset upgrade fitted.

History and detail

The accompanying BSA Owners Club Dating Certificate and Gold Star Owners Club letter confirms that this stunning Gold Star Clubmans was supplied to Matthews, Stockwell, London on the 10th of June 1960 and is fitted with an engine from a 1959 500 cc B34 scramble bike (see photos).

Parts invoices suggest that plenty of maintenance and a degree of restoration work was carried out between 2014 through to 2021, although we don’t have the finite details. Either way, just check out the quality of this bike within our image gallery, you won’t be disappointed.

  • First registered 1st July 1960
  • Original “Buff” continuation logbook
  • V5 in owner’s name
  • Original Registration number

The Bike

As can be seen in the gallery, the pictures tell the story.  This is a bike that presents wonderfully and has clearly been looked after extremely well.

The frame and black paintwork are in great condition, the chrome is bright and clean, the Smiths clocks are believed to be original and currently show 14 miles. All the electrics work as they should, the engine and ancillaries all present nice and clean, along with the wheels which wear good tyres with plenty of tread.

As can be seen within the invoices, virtually all the items prone to degradation have been replaced over the years which lend to this fantastic looking Gold Star. Not exhaustive, but we have listed some of the main items below of the bike detail:

  • Engine number – DBD 34 GS 3983
  • Chassis number – CB32 9863
  • Electronic start – (£1425)
  • DBD34 VM36 Mikuni carbs
  • Telescopic forks and swing-arm suspension with twin shocks
  • 190mm Front brake with twin leading shoe conversion
  • Two tone tank
  • Single seat in fantastic condition
  • Good chrome work
  • Smiths instrumentation
  • Period number plates

Parts replaced or fitted:

  • RRT2 gearset fitted to standard 4-speed gearbox
  • Rebored by RWH Motorcycles
  • Clip-on Racing handlebars
  • Tank to Frame rubbers
  • Battery Straps
  • Kick start shaft
  • Rear wheel bearing, spacer and cover
  • Regulator
  • Bulbs etc.
  • Seat rubber and bolts
  • Fork spring cover
  • Rear brake plate

As is pretty clear and alluded to previously, this is no run of the mill BSA Goldstar; it is a super example that needs for nothing and will be the pride of anyone’s collection.

Summary

We’ve already decided. This is a very high standard BSA, ready to ride

The pinnacle of the Gold Star range. With the added advantage of being extremely well cared for with the added advantage of £1400 quid’s worth of electric start. Those that know these bikes will agree we are looking at a very sought after and well sorted example.

Add some Castrol R, grab your lid, press the starter and go have some fun. A motorcycling legend.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So, we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at team@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to get back to you, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important, and we are here to help and answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images, please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
