The Triumph Tiger Cub. “The Winners Motorcycle of Choice”.  An audacious statement from Triumph. To be fair though, no other Triumph competed and won honours in International Six Day Trials, off-road enduros, desert races, hill climbs, sprints, flat track, short track, grass track, scrambles, speedway, trials, and road racing.

Launched at the 1953 Earls Court Motorcycle Show, the Tiger Cub was a big hit. That appeal of a light weight, easy to live with, fun motorcycle endures today, making them very popular. The Triumph Tiger Cub Sports was intended mainly for the UK.  However, the USA’s hunger for British engineering was huge. Like many others, this one ended up there.

The development of the Tiger Cub model meant the Sports was a real lightweight sports machine for the road. It is rather hard to find a Triumph Tiger Club Sports today. The T20 Sports has several features which mean they have a great following, whether you’re a collector or enthusiast.

  • A ‘D’ shaped speedometer
  • Upswept handlebars
  • Mid-level snaking over the crankcase
  • Burgundy and Silver Sheen colour scheme
  • Single-cylinder OHV, unit construction
  • Capacity: 199cc
  • 16bhp @ 6700 rpm
  • Amal Monobloc carb
  • Wet multiplate clutch
  • Four speed gear box
  • Front Telescopic forks, hydraulic damped
  • Rear Suspension Swing-arm
  • Three-gallon petrol tank
  • Coil Ignition

The engines were updated through the years as soon as improvements came along.

This is what our vendor, Phil, had to say.

This Tiger Cub Sports is a 1960 model with the later 1967 square barrel engine. It was registered in the UK in 1978 from the USA. The bike was fully reconditioned in 2016, and whilst it is not ‘concours’ it remains a very attractive great riding bike in good condition. NO oil leaks and an easy starter

As part of the reconditioning the frame was stripped and painted. It had new wheels & tyres fitted with SS spokes. The bike was rewired and upgraded to 12-volt electrics”.

Our view

What made them so popular back then still stands today. Perfectly at home on the twisty back roads, fast friendly and fun. This Triumph was the first taste of freedom for many riders.  If you fell in love with the Tiger Cub Sports back then, here’s your chance to do it all over again.

The reconditioning is to a good standard. The result is a lovely little bike, easy to ride, easy to own and super value.

Good luck! Please remember, our site uses anti-sniping software which ensures fairness to all bidders. So, if a bid for a lot is received in the last minute, the auction will go into a 2-minute overtime period for each subsequent bid.
