“The dream car you’ll learn to love for the thrill of sheer pleasure”. That was how Ford described the Anglia. To be fair, they weren’t far off the mark.

The most recognisable shape of all time. For Ford, the Anglia 105E marked a new era. Its monocoque construction and all-new 997cc Kent engine was a revelation. But as 1960s family cars go the Anglia is fun thanks to its rev-happy engine. The steering is light and cosseting ride is rather delightful.

This one, a rare survivor offering a couple of options for the new owner. Both of them are good. One is to do what the vendor had been doing, drive and enjoy it. The other is a cosmetic upgrade.

The vendor purchased 3466 SR on 9th March 2017. One of his best friends mentioned to him that a mechanic pal had recovered a classic car from Scotland that belonged to a family member and had re-commissioned it. This piqued interest and a viewing of what turned out to be a 1962 Ford Anglia Deluxe in a rather fetching light green with white swage line. To cap that, the interior was in very good condition with brown carpet and brown and beige seats and interior door panels.

The car had been comprehensively overhauled mechanically, but the bodywork had been left as is with the patina of age and patching up over the course of 55 years or so.

A deal was done and the car taken home to Bracknell and stored in a dry garage with the intention of gentle use pottering around the country roads of Berkshire. However, the Anglia was taken in June of 2017 to Sweden for a classic car rally in the south of the country. It performed without a hitch.

Since then the car hasn’t seen much use and the vendor has decided to sell it to concentrate on some restoration projects.

Interior

As already mentioned, the interior of the Anglia is in lovely condition. The seats, door cards, roof lining and carpets have aged well. The interior chrome fittings are in very good order. There are a few chips to the paintwork of the interior and the surround for the interior light has a crack in it.

Current mileage stands at 61,081, which could well be correct given the interior condition.

Mechanicals

Under the bonnet, all is presentable without any major rust although there is some surface rust. At some point the o/s/f strut surround has had some welded repairs, which can be seen in the photos.

Exterior

The bodywork appears pretty solid but there is bubbling of the paint on the doors, front and rear wings and bonnet. The boot and roof have less bubbling but there are some age-related marks. Sills are sound with surface rust. Front and rear valances and wheel arches are solid but have paint chips.

Within the boot the spare tyre and wheel are good and the boot floor and inner wheel arches are more than sound. The jack and other tools are in their protective linen bag. There’s also a cover for the spare wheel.

Wheels and tyres are all in good condition. All exterior chrome, such as hub caps and bumpers, are fine but there is pitting.

Mechanically the Anglia received much attention in late 2016/early 2017. Headlights, master brake cylinder, front brakes shoes, dynamo brush set, 2 hub caps, piston rings, sump gasket, head gasket, bottom and top rad hoses, clutch slave cylinder and master clutch cylinder were all purchased and fitted, with receipts on file.

Underneath the car is solid and has been under-sealed.

Paperwork

There are some old Vehicle Registration Documents and MOTs on the history file.

Recent work has been a replacement of fuel hoses and freeing off the brakes. The car has a new MOT and will come with a replacement battery. A rather nice Owners Handbook is also included in the sale.

Our view

This Anglia is a very tempting choice. 60s-styling. Head-turning looks. Simple engineering and its pleasurable driving characteristics, with the added bonus of a registration valued at £2000.

To find one today is tricky. To find one that has been in two collections and completed the journeys it has without a hiccup is unheard of.

The otherwise slightly annoying fly in decent pot of ointment is the age deterioration of the external panels. Simple engineering means any work is easily carried out by a half capable hobbyist.

Any work needed had been discounted by our vendor when it comes to the very sensible reserve.
