The Triumph Herald. It looks charming. The way it drives will put a smile on your face. It makes a great British starter classic for those wanting to relive their childhood and own the same car they grew up travelling in the back seat of.

There can be few better places than the Royal Albert Hall. This is where Triumph chose to launch its new small car in 1959, the Herald. In 1967, probably the best-looking Herald, the 13/60, replaced the 12/50. The saloon 13/60 lasted until the end of 1970. In all, more than half a million Triumph Heralds were made.

Finished in Valencia Blue with tan interior and affectionately known as Harriet, our vendor purchased XHX 181G thirteen years ago as entry into classic ownership. During this time, he’s really got to the know the Triumph Herald 13/60, literally inside and out, so we’ll let him tell you the cars story so far:

“Harriet was our first classic purchase in 2011, she needed a lot of work to keep her on the road. The first viewing revealed that the owner had kept a St Christopher gear knob on the car, which had been put there by a previous owner. He explained the charm was meant to keep him safe and that the Herald didn’t let him down! We have kept the tradition going and the gear knob remains to this day!

The vendor also handed us a mound of paperwork which included a copy of the original bill of sale from September 1968 and photographs of the time when the Triumph was used as an everyday car. The invoice revealed that after a Standard 10 was traded in, the Triumph Herald cost £655. The Herald was first registered in Kent and then spent many years as a doctor’s car in West Sussex before heading to Brighton for restoration work with a new owner in the early noughties. We collected the 13/60 from Clunderwen, Pembrokeshire.

Since then, Harriet has been a much-loved car, and we learnt a lot of things regarding classic restoration from her! We have taken the Triumph Herald 13/60 to shows and reliability runs across England, Wales and Scotland and have used her as a commuter car for a while.

The receipt file tells the full story, but highlights of the rebuild and maintenance work include:

  • Chassis welding- this included installation of brand-new outriggers in 2011. They are a common corrosion area. 
  • Body rebuild in 2017. This included installation of new front wings, new front valance and rear valance. All of these are common problem areas. 
  • New headliner 2018
  • Electronic ignition fitted 2020
  • Seat rebuild in 2022. This included new foam and webbing for front seats and full restoration of seat materials.
  • New stainless exhaust 2022
  • Rear brake service 2024

One other modification resulting from the internal work is that the wipers, horn and washers now operate from a separate panel under the dashboard instead of the unreliable original switch.

Invoices for work done during my ownership are present in the history file.

The indicated mileage is 67154 and I believe this is accurate.

There is scope for the next owner to take her forward. Harriet was our first restoration, and we know that she’s not perfect. I would like to point out the following items that I think would benefit from improvement:

  • The gearbox has a noisy first gear. It is non synchro first gear and I suspect it has been ‘crashed’ a few times
  • The brightwork on the rear of the car could be replaced as it is looking tired
  • The fuel and temperature gauges only work when the lights are on dipped beam. We have never worked out why this happens!
  • The driver’s door gap with the bonnet has been difficult to get right since new hinges were fitted

However, the Triumph Herald 13/60 is sound underneath, has good paintwork, many good interior features and the engine is reliable.  She is a friendly, forgiving car, very easy to drive and will offer miles of fun for the next owner.”

Our View

The Triumph Herald was one of Britain’s most popular family cars of the 1960s; stylish on the outside with bombproof mechanicals on the inside. The Herald holds fond memories for so many of us.

Today, it is still a classic you really can use every day. Everywhere you go, others will want to stop and chat.

Many ‘experts’ consider the Triumph Herald 13/60 as the best combination of engine and body style. There can be few better, more fun, practical classics. This Herald is ready to go. Good luck!
