Description

Hark! The Herald. Without doubt one of the best classics for charm, practicality and simplicity. The perfect classic? Probably.

The Triumph Herald. It looks charming. The way it drives will put a smile on your face. It makes a great British starter classic for those wanting to relive their childhood and own the same car they grew up travelling in the back seat of.

Background

There can be few better places than the Royal Albert Hall. This is where Triumph chose to launch its new small car in 1959, the Herald. In 1967, probably the best-looking Herald, the 13/60, replaced the 12/50. The saloon 13/60 lasted until the end of 1970. In all, more than half a million Triumph Heralds were made.

Inside

Open the wide Herald door and the Triumph is instantly and easily accessible. It feels good from the get-go. The steering wheel comes naturally to hand and is adjustable. The pedals are sensibly spaced. The right foot obviously sees most of the action but there is room for the left foot to be nicely parked within loads of space.

  • Original three spoke wire steering wheel
  • Tan interior in fine condition
  • Non-standard hi-back front seats with integrated head rests
  • The genuine front seats will come with the Herald
  • Black Carpet
  • Light Yew veneer
  • Full length Webasto roof
  • The genuine front seats will come with the Herald

Outside

  • British Racing Green
  • Resprayed
  • See photos of restoration work in the gallery
  • Clean and tidy brightwork
  • Refurbed wheels complete with Triumph centre caps
  • Lots of original features still in place

The Triumph Herald 13/60 came with a restyled front end, mimicking the Vitesse. From that slanted bonnet, the three-bar grille, right back to those rear quarter fins with integrated rear lamps, the Herald shape is delightful, cute and superb, all in one. Nobody looks at a Herald without smiling.

Mechanicals

  • 1296cc in-line four-cylinder engine
  • 61bhp
  • Independent front suspension
  • Clamshell bonnet
  • Front disc brakes

The Herald 13/60 will deliver peppy performance and will cruise comfortably at safe motorway speeds. The unstressed engine and synchromesh four speed transmission are rugged and dependable. The lovely clamshell front end is in good condition and has the bonus of making everything really easy to get at. Out and about, the Triumph Herald’s incredible turning circle makes it very easy work and it is highly manoeuvrable. The rack and pinion set up gives a good feel on the road and make the steering feel light and easy.

Summary

The Triumph Herald was one of Britain’s most popular family cars of the 1960s; stylish on the outside with bombproof mechanicals on the inside. The Herald holds fond memories for so many of us.

Today, it is still a classic you really can use every day. Everywhere you go, others will want to stop and chat.

Many ‘experts’ consider the Triumph Herald 13/60 as the best combination of engine and body style. There can be few better, more fun, practical classics. This Herald is ready to go. Good luck!
