Rover launched their P6 model at the Earls Court 1963 Motor Show. The Rover P6 was aimed at the high flying young executive who wanted modern, sporting, high quality transport and the car went on to win Rover the first ever European Car of the Year Award in 1964

With an advanced design that included a De Dion tube rear suspension, disc brakes all round and an alloy bonnet and boot lid. The early four-cylinder power plants remained conventional until the introduction of the Buick derived 3528cc V8 which joined the ranks in 1968.

A Borg Warner 35 automatic was the only transmission offered by Rover until 1971 which saw the addition of the four-speed manual 3500S model that we have here. The letter ‘S’ did not denote ‘Sport’ though, it was chosen because it stood for something specific on those cars: ‘Synchromesh’.

Rover had invested heavily in the car’s engine and running gear, so left most other aspects of the car unchanged. However, the Rover P6 3500 could be readily distinguished from the 2000 variant thanks to various prominent V8 badges on the outside and beneath the radio. Well, you may as well shout about the power under the bonnet if you’ve got it!

This Rover P6 3500S

First registered in April 1972, this Rover is in a paint scheme of Monza Red with black leather interior and wood trim. We’re told that she starts beautifully, runs very well and just as importantly, stops well too!

Our vendor, Simon, is popping her into the garage this week to check out the reverse gear and light as the reverse gear pops out from time to time so he wants this to be checked before the new owner takes possession.

Inside

The interior of this Rover P6 looks as it should, overall good condition but the driver’s seat will need some attention:

  • The wooden trim is in place
  • Two spoke steering wheel with leather trim
  • All seats look a little lived in and the driver’s seat needs some more attention and some repairs to the tears
  • Carpets have been replaced
  • Door cards look to be in good condition

Exterior and Engine

Simon tells us:

The V8 engine is quiet and pulls well and as you would expect will cruise at motorway speed without fuss.

Although this car is not perfect (who is at 50?!) overall she’s in generally good condition and runs well for her age. She’s pretty solid all over, with just some surface rust to the offside sills.

  • An SD1 head has been fitted to allow her to run on E5 petrol.
  • In 2021, a new clutch system was fitted, new cylinders and the starter motor was also rebuilt
  • There are a few minor faults and wear and tear marks on the car. There is some surface ‘rusting’ where the driver’s door meets the floor but as far as Simon can tell, it’s only light
  • The brightwork is looking a little mottled in places.
  • V5 is present along with 2 keys

Simon has been honest enough to say that “There are some slight blemishes on the boot and bonnet so they could do with a refresh and the drive’s door restraint clip is broken.”

Obviously, she is now MOT and Road Tax exempt but the last MOT was in 2018 at 318 miles and was passed with no advisories. She’s covered less than 2,000 miles since then. Looking at MOT paperwork and the odometer, we believe the mileage to be 102,384 but please make your own enquiries

Our view

Our vendor, Simon, has owned the P6 for 5 years. During that time, he has enjoyed attending shows and the like. But then knee surgery in 2019 meant that the P6 was parked up for a while as he was unable to drive.

Then came Covid and like the rest of us, the P6 was also in lockdown.  Unfortunately, recent health issues means that Simon has to find a new home for his lovely P6, and has set the reserve realistically to reflect that.

Ready to be enjoyed as she is or you may choose to give her a bit of TLC, whatever you choose, get in, sit back and let that V8 engine take the strain.

Vehicle Location: Bedfordshire MK2 – it’s the responsibility of the winning bidder to make collection / transportation arrangements directly with the vendor.

 Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s are worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at auction@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to ring you back and discuss, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important and we are here to help and also answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage bidders to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
