Is there anything cooler than a classic VW T2 Camper Van? Judging by the conversations you’ll have wherever you go and the general interest and thumbs up from other drivers as you pass, no, is the answer.

Everyone, young and old will want to chat, touch, look inside or simply know more. This really is the classic car equivalent of getting a puppy; a massive people magnet.

Our vendors purchased this example last year and have spent some time and money improving it. Being somewhat of an impulse purchase, the family have come to the conclusion that they will just not use it as originally intended.  A shame really as the dream of using it regularly is just no longer possible.

Our vendors shared that, as much as they will be sad to see it leave, they are also pleased to have sorted the Camper’s main foibles prior to the new owner collecting it.

It will be supplied with two sets of keys, the V5 – currently registered as historic, a handful of previous MOTs and some invoices including yearly service evidence from our vendor’s ownership plus some recent “Just Camper” invoices.

Outside

As you can see from the images, this bay window is a very solid example with the white and green paintwork presenting well, close inspection will show that it isn’t perfect and has some areas that are showing its age, but for a fifty-two year-old Camper we are pretty impressed with how well it has held up.

The near side rear lower quarter has some bubbling and there is a small crack in the paintwork to the centre panel, behind the driver’s door. Plus, the usual age-related marks here and there.

The doors have been treated to new metal where needed and are extremely solid.  The engine and gearbox were recently removed to service it thoroughly, we will come back to that, and whilst removed the engine bay was checked for rust and treated with new metal plates where needed.

Poke your head underneath and you’ll see that the floor is solid with a healthy layer of stone chip protective paint applied. This was done around five years ago by the previous owner but was checked again whilst the engine bay and rear floor were welded.

The pop-up roof works as it should and is in very good condition.

Being only the third keeper in the last 22 years, the Camper has clearly been looked after well. Now having had another recent bout of maintenance the body and chassis are in “ready to use” condition.  Nice and solid and a very good base should you want to improve the aesthetics further.

Inside

The classic VW camper lifestyle is all about the interior. Take a look at the images and you will see that it is all in situ; so often these you will find that these interiors are incomplete or at best, ruined with various attempts to modernise the layout. Well, have no fear, it is all there and ready to use.

It should be noted that whilst the engine was out, the rear interior was removed and large swathes of insulation/sound deadening material was fitted.

The VW Camper still retains its original fridge although unfortunately this gave up some time ago and a cooker has recently been installed. Our vendors have the original fridge and sink for the new buyer to finish the interior as they desire.

Admittedly the woodwork could do with a little attention, but it does add a certain amount of charm.

Our vendors have recently fitted a full width rock n roll bed, carpet and buddy seat . The soft seating is all believed to have been recovered at some point and matches the side panelling and door pads. With no obvious rips or tears, they do the job as expected.

The drivers cabin area is all in good order, the seats sport the same cream vinyl as the rear and look great with the matching door pads. All the dials and switches work as they should, and the steering wheel is showing no cracks.

The fitted seatbelts retract as they should, and the door furniture is all in place.

There is a functioning Radio, CD player with large screen (possibly a DVD player) fitted that is connected to the front and rear speakers, unfortunately our vendors don’t have the instruction booklet so are unsure how to operate it, and to be honest haven’t tried to work it in the time they have owned the Camper.  Lastly there is the obligatory fire extinguisher is in place.

It really is ready to go.

Mechanicals

As mentioned previously, our vendors have spent the time since purchasing the Camper improving the mechanicals so that the new owner can be safe in the knowledge that they have purchased a sound example.

Starting with the engine and gearbox, it made sense to remove the whole unit for easy access. The extensive work started with the engine being fully serviced with new plugs, HT leads and oils and filters. The twin carburettors were removed, tidied and refitted, a new fan blade was fitted and the alternator has had a new fixing strap installed.  Removing the engine also allowed it to have all the tinwork removed, repaired and fitted correctly and securely so that all presents well now.

It was then fitted with all new gearchange linkages, gearbox oil, the half-shafts were replaced with new gaiters and CV joints before having all the wiring tidied up.  During all this engine bay work it was found that there was the remnants of a previous LPG conversion install at some point, this was all removed prior to it all being refitted leaving the camper now running as sweet as you would expect.

Along with the gear linkages being refreshed our vendors also saw to the steering, these are renowned for loose gear linkages and steering boxes so the pins were all replaced as needed so that’s another common issue sorted.

On top of that, the previous owner had his local garage service it yearly placing all the invoices in the documents pack.

The Camper starts willingly on the first turn of the key every time, not surprising considering the most recent works plus the previous owners servicing habits.

The previous owner also advised that the clutch was replaced approximately three years ago.  The tyres are all also very healthy with good amounts of tread.

Whilst now classed as an historic vehicle and therefore road tax, MOT and even the dreaded ULEZ exempt, there is no reason whatsoever to think that this Camper wouldn’t fly through a current MOT test.

Summary

From our inspection of the images, we can see a few points that the vendors have honestly highlighted. As is usual for a 1970s classic there are the odd surface blemishes, along with the few small areas previously stated. However, as we have also mentioned, it is a very solid example that has benefitted from recent welding and a great deal of mechanical and interior maintenance so could either be used as is or if you decide to do so, could have a small amount of attention to bring it to a very nice example.

The odometer reads approx. 48k miles, there is no way of knowing whether that has been round the clock but having recently been given the once over as stated above we doubt that really matters.  Either way, and fortunately for you, it is being offered for sale as a good solid running example of these truly iconic VWs

We’ll leave the last word to our vendors..”We have just returned from a 60 mile round trip and the camper drove well, we managed to reach 55 mph!”

What more could you want? Good luck bidding!

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So, we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at team@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to ring you back and discuss, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.
