Six cylinders. Six carburettors. 24 valves. Two overhead camshafts. 100bhp.

The Honda CBX was and remains a technical marvel. It is rolling demonstration of the state of the art of motorcycle design.

Background

In the later Seventies, there was fierce competition in the 1,000cc class of motorcycles. In mid-1978, Honda dropped the CBX bombshell. Everything changed.

The only major upgrade came when Honda launched the Pro-link version of the CBX. It is often said the final version of any model range is the best. That is probably true with the CBX.

History

  • 2300 miles from new
  • Mileage confirmed by DVLA
  • Original sales invoice
  • Stored for a number of years

Our vendor, Mark, purchased the Honda CBX from the estate of a friend. Once Mark had he commenced work on it bringing the to standard it is now.

Externals

The Honda CBX Pro-link hit the showrooms two years after the launch. Honda turned the naked Honda CBX into a sports tourer, in one move almost inventing a genre of motorcycles that is probably the most popular sector today.

A fairing was added. This is handy because the CBX is capable of easily travelling at two miles per minute. Neat, narrow removable panniers were fitted each sides, these are not currently fitted but do come with the CBX.

Honda fitted an all new Pro-Link single shock at the rear. The rising-rate suspension system worked with air pressure, combined with a coil spring. A three-position knob adjusts rebound settings.

The front end was also updated. The fork tubes enlarged from 35mm to 39mm. Honda increased the rake slightly enhancing straight-line stability. Wheel width, front and back, was slightly increased to allow for larger tyres.

We’ll let Mark pick up the story.

“The bike was stripped and checked over, due to the time it had stood. New seals were installed in the forks. The fuel tank cleaned out, checked for rust/rot. Luckily it had been drained when put in to dry store.

I sent a couple of items were sent away for re-chroming, engine bars and chainguard.

The original panniers and the side mounting racks are included in the sale.

One silencer has a small dent which is fairly un-noticeable, this was not replaced as it is an original part.”

We’ll let you gaze at our Image Gallery to form your own opinion.

Mechanicals

The heart of this Honda CBX is that wonderful engine. Forty years on, the classic CBX still sets the benchmark for engineering.

The engine itself is a work of art, with few parallels then or today. The double-overhead-camshaft, air-cooled unit is as compact as it was possible, while being warp-speed powerful. Maximum power is produced at 9000rpm. Torque is plentiful, making for a lazy ride or a speedy, faster paced journey when the mood takes you.

Honda kept engine changes to the CBX Pro link to a minimum. Reprofiled camshafts were installed. These altered the power curve, giving more mid-range, as opposed to top-end.

No less impressive is the way the engine goes about its job. Mark had all six 28mm Keihin carburettors stripped and rebuilt. A well set up CBX Pro link like this is smooth and effortless. At tick-over a rider can be forgiven for continuously looking at the tacho needle for signs of life. On the move, just the whoosh of the six-into-two exhaust pipes give the game away as the scenery blurs and the urgency of things in the distance hurtling towards you becomes a little troubling.

Additional info

We are keen for you to hear Mark’s comments, verbatim;

“Honda CBX1000 Pro-Link 1982. This motorcycle has only covered, just over, 2300 miles from new. (This can be confirmed with DVLA). Original sale invoice is included.

The bike was obtained from the estate of a friend who had kept it locked away in his shed for several years.

The bike was stripped and checked over, due to the time it had stood, with new seals in forks, engine. Carburettors stripped and rebuilt. Tank cleaned out, checked for rust/rot which luckily had been drained and dry stored. A couple of items were sent away for re-chroming ( engine bars and chainguard) to Derby chrome platers, which is a prestigious plating company and do superb work.

The bike is now fully MOT ready although from January 2023, it became exempt from tax or MOT.

The rear of the bike had Honda brackets and indicators placed on the bike itself, as the panniers were not required, (I intended to use the bike). The original panniers and the side mounting racks are included in the sale.

One silencer has a small dent which is fairly un-noticeable, this was not replaced as it is an original part.

The bike is not a showpiece as it was used, albeit for a short time, and as stated my intention was to use the bike.

This is a very reluctant sale, due to illness, as I have never ridden the bike and now have to part with all my small collection”

Our view

The Honda CBX is an historically significant machine. This particular one, is significant it its own right.

With this mileage and in this condition it is truly a one-off.

As you can see from Mark’s comments, it was never ever meant to come to market. We are honoured Mark has chosen us to market such a magnificent machine.

All of the above said, this Honda has a reserve set on it that means it will sell. Whatever lucky bidder wins this we will all be green with envy.

We expect a lot of interest and lot of questions. Don’t hesitate it is what we are here for. And for goodness sake do not miss this opportunity. Good luck.

Good luck! Please remember, our site uses anti-sniping software which ensures fairness to all bidders. So, if a bid for a lot is received in the last minute, the auction will go into a 2-minute overtime period for each subsequent bid.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at auction@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to ring you back and discuss, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important and we are here to help and also answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
