Description

  • NEW TIMING BELT FITTED 9TH JAN
  • Low mileage example – 55k km = 34,358 miles
  • MOT’d until 6th November 2024
  • From a private collection

The Maserati Biturbo hit the streets of Italy in 1981 and was initially produced as a two door executive grand tourer. The four door 420 was launched four years later, powered by a 2.0 litre V6 engine. This model was aimed primarily at the Italian market, where cars with engines over two litres of capacity were heavily taxed by the government.

Our vendor bought this Maserati 420 Biturbo Saloon in Southern Sweden in January 2018. He kept it there so that he could drive it on the wonderfully quiet and well-maintained roads when he visited. In February 2022, fed up with the various Covid restrictions, he had the Biturbo imported to England. All duties have been paid and the car is now UK registered.

He goes on to tell us about the condition of the car.

“It really is very good with no rust to speak of other than a few small bubbles on the sills. The paintwork is also nice with a few minor age related chips and a minor scrape on the o/s/r wheel arch. Exterior stainless steel trim is in fine fettle.

This is a very low mileage example and mechanically it is in good order.

It’s 2 litre, V6 engine fires readily into life and, with the stainless steel exhaust, it sounds great. Under the bonnet everything is very clean. Changes of the 5-speed gear box are smooth.

Sitting within the car, there is a sense of quality and refinement with beautiful light blue leather door trims, dashboard and arm rest; there are a few minor scuffs. The 80’s Missoni patterned cloth seats do not have any rips or tears and the stitching is intact. Carpets and wood trim are in good order.

On the underside of the boot lid, the tool kit is complete. Carpeting within the boot is all there and more than presentable.

Original alloy wheels are in good condition but there are minor scrapes on the rim edges and the lacquer has lifted in a few places”

NB: The odometer shows 55,294 km which is 34,358 miles

Paperwork shows that the cam belt was last changed in 2014, so the vendor will have the cam belt replaced for the winning bidder.

UPDATE FROM OUR VENDOR 9TH JANUARY 2024: The timing belt was changed today, the tensioner & water pump were checked and both are fine so no need to change them.

Work was carried out prior to the MOT, including:

  • Brakes & fluid levels checked
  • Lights checked
  • Rear fuel hoses were replaced
  • New battery installed

Since returning from the MOT, a few small jobs have been done to the Maserati including:

  • Repair of a sticking electric window (driver’s door)
  • Repair of N/S rear exterior door handle, which had become disconnected from the opening mechanism
  • Some rubber exhaust hangers have been replaced
  • Choke cable repaired.

Some Swedish service invoices and the old Swedish registration documents are in the history file, as are invoices for all work conducted in the UK and the current V5. An original driver’s handbook is included with the Biturbo as well as some original sales brochures and a photocopy of the Service Manual.

Our View

Quirky and rare, these Maserati Biturbos are starting to be realised and are creeping up in value. Is there any wonder? Just look at the attention to detail in the styling, the interior alone is a work of art. Deliciously eighties in a soft, plush, comforting way which just makes you want to climb inside. Our advice is to grab a good one now before they get too pricey.
