Description

  • One owner from new
  • Just 22,356 miles
  • Stored carefully for around 20 years
  • From a deceased estate

The classic Ford Capri had a revival in it’s later years of production. The superb V6-engined, rear-wheel drive set-up was seen by many as the perfect antidote to crazy hot-hatches.

Ford ordered it’s Special Vehicle Engineering department (SVE), based in Essex, where else?! to build the best model Capri ever. They did. That was launched at the Geneva Motor Show.

SVE took the formidable second generation 2.8-litre V6 engine and equipped it with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection. This Capri 2.8i Special was now good for 160bhp and 0-60 in under 8 seconds.

The Capri 2.8i Special is not just about the engine though.  To make sure it handled all that extra V6 power, the SVE team lowered the suspension and fitted larger, uprated anti-roll bars coupled with gas-filled shock absorbers

Making sure the whole package was going to stay nailed to the tarmac, the Capri 2.8i Special was fitted with seven spoke RS alloy wheels with 205/60VR tyres as standard.

The final piece of the mechanical jigsaw was the fitment of a limited slip diff (LSD).

The inside of the car wasn’t missed either, the Special came with it’s own factory fitted Recaros in grey half leather. Finally, the Capri 2.8i Special had arrived.

History

We’re not going to lie, this is a touch emotional. This Capri 2.8i Special is from a deceased estate. Linda is downsizing and it is now time for the Capri to go. Linda came to us with Pete’s Capri, ‘Caprice’  because she’d been looking around and chatting with people about selling. Because the Capri meant so much to them both, she found she just couldn’t ‘click’ with anyone she spoke to.

She contacted the team here and after the briefest of chats, we all felt comfortable. For our part, we are genuinely privileged to be trusted with this outstanding classic.

The Boss says we are different. She’s right.

This Capri 2.8i Special

This might be the shortest marketing piece we ever write. One word. Amazing! That would probably cover it.

Outside and Underside

Pete spec’d this Capri 2.8i Special from new specifically in Diamond White and it looks wonderful.

The mileage is warranted – under 23,000 miles – and given that light use, and always, always kept in a brick built garage, under a cover (only the finest cotton will do* see below!), is why this fabulous Capri 2.8i Special is in the condition you see in the gallery.

Remarkable, doesn’t even go near it.

Inside

Those Steel Grey half leather Recaros still look outstanding. Everything is as it should be inside a classic that has been loved, cherished and looked after by one owner with only 22,356 genuine miles.

Engine

The Capri 2.8i Special had not been started or driven for about 18-24 months. With a clean fuel feed and a borrowed battery guess what? She started without any fuss. We’ve only run it for a few minutes. It would be reckless to do any more without a fuller recommission.

Paperwork

We do not have a great volume of paperwork, that is, in part, as a result of limited use and of course being from a deceased estate.

We do have the important bits:

  • The original Sales Order dated 19 May 1987
  • The Vehicle Sales Invoice for £8,102.96 dated 1 Aug 1987
  • V5 registration document
  • Handbooks and Service books that came with the car
  • MOTs from the first year required to when the Capri 2.8i Special was stored

We have other bits and bobs plus invoices that all support the mileage.

What the paperwork also does is verify Linda’s comments to us that “around 20 years ago, Pete stopped using the Capri on the road, saying he was going to keep the car and keep the mileage down”.

We understand that Caprice was started and driven regularly along a short private road attached to their house.

Linda recalled “Pete let me drive it once, along the road that looks onto the beach at Southend, but I felt too nervous to drive it again. When he used to start her up, my neighbour would tell me she loved hearing that engine roar.

When we went out in it, people would stop and ask questions and say what a stunning car.

She really was Pete’s pride and joy, he lovingly cleaned and polished her until she gleamed.”

In fact, Linda told us that every year they had the ritual of washing the sheets that he kept on Caprice to keep her in such pristine condition. Pete didn’t want polyester covering his Caprice, the  sheets had to be pure cotton. That did make us chuckle!

 Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s are worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at auction@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to ring you back and discuss, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important and we are here to help and also answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage bidders to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.
