Very few cars can lay claim to spawning an entire market sector, the Volkswagen Golf is one of them. It set the benchmark and most manufactures were left riding on the coat tails of its amazing success.
Today, a cult following has grown up around the VW Golf Mk1 models like this.
History
- First registered 31 May 1990
- Our vendor has owned for eight years
- In the last 17 years, on average, the Golf has covered around 2,000 miles per year
- The Golf flew through it’s MoT last week, with two minor advisories – so that gives the new buyer peace of mind
Owned since 2015, this VW Golf MK1 Clipper has had very little use during our vendor’s ownership and is currently in storage. That is reflected in the condition.
Inside
This Golf has benefitted from the legendary German build quality. The superior material used on the grey check cloth seats are mirrored on the door trims etc. It looks good. The dashboard is original with the addition of a modern audio system and additional voltmeter in the centre console.
- Front door pockets are from the Cabrio Sportline giving space for larger front speakers
- Uprated front and rear speakers
- Removable Rear Wind deflector (which makes the world of difference)
- Blaupunkt Bluetooth Head Unit
- Electric Aerial
Slide into the driver’s seat and you’re transported back to the early 90’s.
Outside
The Karmann-designed Cabriolet body is timeless. At first glance it might look like a tin top Golf, but there the similarity ends. The VW Golf cabriolets were designed specifically as convertibles and that is what makes them so sought after as summer classics. With no roof, several extra body strengthening measures were added. An extra cross member, deeper sills and a rollover hoop. All of which result in superbly engineered classic car.
- Unusual Paprika Red
- Black electric hood – in full working order
- Grey tonneau cover
- Rare American Spec boot lid with integrated high level brake light
- Euro Rear lights and clear front and side indicators (originals in boot)
- Grille Eyebrow Lip
The Paintwork is mainly original with some work carried out to bumpers, wheel arches and skirts. Plus, a repair around the fuel filler neck.
Mechanicals
- Original engine and transmission
- 1.8-litre
- 90bhp
- Five speed transmission
- Genuine VW/BBS alloys with locking wheel bolts and new tyres.
Our vendor tells us,
“Using VW OE parts, the brakes are from a 2001 Polo GTI giving slightly larger front and conversion from Drums to Discs on rear. Slightly lowered on H&R coil springs.
There is some history in the service book with original dealer paperwork, along with a copied Service Manual”
Our view
Many argue the original is the best. What’s not disputed is the VW Golf’s place in classic car history.
Many of these Mk1 VW Golfs have been butchered by the Max Power brigade. Aside from some subtle upgrades which add value, this one is largely original. Thirty years on, good VW Golf Mk1s are hard to find.
True, classic car enthusiasts know there are many reasons for having a convertible in your life at some point.
Well built. In good condition. Supremely practical with four proper seats. And best of all great, great value at the moment. The VW Golf Mk1 Clipper Cabriolet ticks all the boxes.
Summer’s here, go on.. you know you want to…
