The Jaguar XJ8 took all the brilliant emotional elements of Jaguar history and made massive steps forward, not least of which was quality. With its all new V8 engine the XJ8 was transformed into a BMW beating, Mercedes munching success.

These classics have been woefully undervalued for too long. But as the 25-year rule approaches, the market is switching-on to a classic that combines high quality engineering with all the characteristics of collectable Jaguars.

With echoes of the classic Jaguar XJ6 series, the XJ8 however represented the mind-set of a new generation of engineers at Jag’s HQ in Coventry. The upgraded design was perfectly executed. It led to a Milan panel of experts voting it L’Automobile piu Bella del Mondo – roughly translated to ‘The Most Beautiful Car in the World’.

The XJ8 V8 makes a big impression. In Topaz metallic, with quad headlamps and of course the classic coachline running the length of the Jaguar it is every inch how a Jaguar should look.

Thanks to the low usage and appearing to be well looked after, this XJ8 is in good condition. Our vendor has highlighted what he describes as “a very small amount of surface rust on both sills towards the front”. Overall, the Jaguar looks imposing.

The engine bay is very clean and tidy. The vendor reports the car drives exactly as it should, pulling and driving well.

Technically very good, the XJ8 was probably the most developed, the fastest, and the sharpest handling of its time, aided in no small measure by its wonderful V8 engine. It is a rapidly evolving classic along with a being known as a fine driver’s car – a car difficult not to love.

Bottom line

Drop in behind the wheel of an XJ8 and there’s a profound sense of occasion. That Jaguar feel. The history, quality and style of a British marque. Put your foot down and the Big Cat roars down the road. It is easily a daily driver or a great second classic car.

As an ownership proposition, the XJ8 is miles ahead of its predecessors.

The 25-year rule is kicking-in. These were £65-70 grand when new. Like all new cars, prices tumble. The descent then slows. Five years ago, these could be picked up for around two grand. That was the bottom. Though still amazing value, they are now creeping up. This XJ8 is a classic car you can own with your heart and your bank manager’s admiring smile.
