To say cult status now surrounds the Subaru Impreza is an understatement.

The second generation was launched in 2000. The radically styled version divided opinion. Shrewd buyers know this 2nd gen Impreza is one of the shrewdest buys on the market.

Background

In October 2000 Subaru launched the impressively revised Impreza range. Whilst the looks split commentators’ views, Subaru hit the bullseye with the driving dynamics.

The range consisted of:

  • 95bhp 1.6 litre TS five-door sports wagon
  • 125bhp 2.0 GX sports wagon and four-door saloon
  • 218bhp WRX saloon and sports wagon

Those who drove it knew instantly how good it really was. When the Impreza WRX STi smashed the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VII off its perch, the Impreza range was in pole position again.

  • First registered 31 March 2001
  • Prodrive Performance Pack fitted when the car was around 2 years old
  • Our vendor is the second owner
  • He has owned if for 20 years. That is always a great sign
  • Fresh MOT
  • Service book and large file of invoices for all work undertaken

Mechanicals

  • EJ 205 2.0 litre flat four engine
  • Remapped
  • All wheel drive
  • Power steering
  • Five speed gearbox
  • 0-60 in under six seconds
  • 135mph top speed (allegedly)
  • Air to air intercooler
  • Coil over suspension
  • Poly bushes all round

This heart of this Impreza WRX is, of course, its DOHC 2.0L flat-four turbo engine. All that lovely potency runs through a five-speed manual transmission to its legendary AWD system.

The brilliant balance is achieved by 55 percent of the power going to the rear wheels under normal driving conditions. Power delivery is much more refined. The new engine management system means the horsepower is fed sharply yet with the utmost composure throughout the rev range. In many ways it is quicker and more rewarding than the early hooligan cars. With a quicker steering rack, excellent brakes and revised shock absorbers, it’s even easier to exploit the Impreza’s capabilities. During our vendor’s long ownership, he tells us:

“I purchased the Subaru when it was on 27k miles, and the car now sits at 71k miles. The cambelt has been replaced every 5 years as per the service schedule with the next replacement due in 2026”

Outside

  • Blue/Black Paint (Code 08V)
  • Front driving lamps
  • Bonnet intake
  • Alloy wheels
  • Spare save wheel
  • Rear spoiler

The known issue of the rear wheel arches becoming crusty has been dealt during our vendor’s time. He tells us: “I’ve had the rear arches, sills & front cross member done recently”.

You can assess for yourself the condition of this Subaru from the multitude of images in the Gallery. Apart from the odd wear and tear mark in keeping with a 23-year-old classic, it looks like it has been looked after. Unlike many Impreza’s this one is completely standard. That is a major selling point.

Inside

The WRX comes well loaded and the interior quality is much improved over the previous model.

  • Leather Momo steering wheel
  • Sport seats
  • Stereo system with CD player
  • Electric windows and mirrors
  • Remote door locks
  • Charcoal dash and door trims with silver accents
  • Grey seats with light grey inserts

All the seats, trim, headlining, etc, are damage free. You’ll note a water mark on the front passenger seat. It looks like good soapy wash and an hour or so with a Vax would make short work of that.

The boot space is large, making the Subaru super practical. There are few classics with the performance of the WRX with four doors and rear seats.

Summary

Cult cars usually come with considerable caveats. Not so the Impreza. Brilliant to drive. A super practical Supercar. Baked in Japanese reliability and easy to own.

They’ve been incorrectly undervalued for too long. Along with long term ownership, decent mileage and important service history, this means this Impreza is the smartest buy right now. With a sensible Reserve, this Subaru is going to get a lot of attention.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So, we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at team@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to get back to you, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important, and we are here to help and answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images, please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
