The Ford Escort has become a British motoring legend. In 1990 the Ford Escort Mk5 was a car intensely anticipated. It would be Ford’s first all-new model for a decade. With its sharp, contemporary styling and switch to front-wheel drive it was as a bold move for the usually conservative manufacturer.

In keeping with Ford’s using stance on model types, they launched the Escort with the base ‘L’ model, right up the range topping ‘halo’ model, in Ghia spec, like this one.

Customers commented on how airy the Escort Mk5 was. The all new Escort, developed under the project code CE14, was the result of five years work by a Ford team of 2,500 designers and engineers. The investment of £1Bn, was easily the most Ford had ever chucked at a new model.

The result was a car with slim body pillars and large glass areas which massively improved all round visibility. The dashboard is simple but well laid out. With the interior on the Ghia model very well spec’d out.

Car Magazine published its first review of the new models in October 1990. The new Escort was heralded as “the future best-selling car in Britain”. They were spot-on.

The all new Escort Mk5 had a host of mechanical innovations too. Not least of which was the variable-ratio steering. It was was unusually light and sharp. At dead centre it was entirely neutral but highly geared either side, delivering a sharp, sporty turn-in. This was perfect for slow-speed manoeuvrability.

Jumping in the Escort Mk5 it comes across as a great cross over. Defo not a 60’s designed Morris Marina (sorry Sarah) but equally not a soul-less electric box on wheels (sorry EV drivers).

You do have to drive the Escort. There are no modern electronics which is brilliant. That gives the you the benefit of a greater feel of what the Mk5 Ghia is doing.

The ride quality, especially in the Ghia model is probably the Escort Mk5s strongest feature.

This Escort Mk5 Ghia

  • Registered 30 September 1991
  • Two owners
  • Second owner acquired 6 months after first registration in March 1992
  • That suggests this could have been new-model demonstrator car. Probably someone senior in the dealership given it was the Ghia model
  • The second owner was a mechanical engineer
  • The Mk5 was dry stored as part of small private collection for c.15years
  • Only 40,800 genuine miles
  • Velour seats
  • Sunroof
  • Electric windows
  • Immobiliser

Our vendor came by the Escort Mk5 after purchasing a business that was retirement sale. With the business and premises came the owners small collection of private cars. This Escort Ghia was tucked away inside. It looks as if he bought this early edition Escort Mk5 in top spec Ghia form with the exact intent of never using it, hence the mileage

As you can see from the images, the Escort is not minor blemish free. What classic car is? We asked our vendor to give us an overall flavour of the Mk5. Here are his comments.

“Underneath the car is very solid and an original example, no welding has been done whatsoever and the car is still very solid.

Even the bulkhead by the battery tray where these cars were prone to rust out is still completely solid and original.

Very straight and tidy car completely original. Sun roof works as it should as do the electric windows, heater controls etc”

Our view

A two owner, warranted miles, Ghia spec, early model of one of Ford’s classic models. These do not come along every day.

Nineties cars are where the interest is in the classic world at the moment. Anything in that era with the word Ford and Escort are eagerly gobbled up.

The car was clearly intended not to be used. Just tucked away in dry storage from where it would appear, when the time was right, blinking into the classic car world.

We guess if he hadn’t retired, he would probably have left it another decade. But then it would be big money. His loss is your gain. Because for once, this Escort Mk5 Ghia gives you a chance to get in at the bottom and benefit from the upside.

You’ll kick yourself if you miss this Escort Mk5 as it has an extremely sensible reserve.

Good luck bidding! Please remember, our site uses anti-sniping software which ensures fairness to all bidders. So, if a bid for a lot is received in the last minute, the auction will go into a 2-minute overtime period for each subsequent bid.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at auction@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to ring you back and discuss, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important and we are here to help and also answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
