The Ford Corsair was one of Ford’s most stylish looking cars. With its streamlined profile it was a departure from the boxy, square-shaped Cortina and Zephyr / Zodiac models that it fitted between.

The classic Corsair had a short production run from 1963-1970. Only 300,000 Corsairs were made. It’s estimated that only around 300-350 survive today. Very, very few can be in this remarkable condition.

Having three previous keepers is a great sign of any classic car. Our vendor understands all of those previous keepers were related family members. Given the condition it has been kept in by each and every one of them, that makes a lot sense now.

Our vendor is also given to understand throughout it’s previous life the classic Corsair was always kept in a garage. The underside of the classic Corsair has been waxoyled, along with the inside of all four doors.

Well, take a looks for yourself. It is incredible

  • Four dial dash
  • Bench front seat
  • Period chrome in great condition
  • Headlining is clean and damage free
  • Genuine door cards in clean tidy condition
  • Original door architecture all in place
  • Early original bakelite steering wheel with chrome horn rim

The attention to detail and originality is outstanding. Items such as the original alloy sill treads are still there, being held on by the original fixings by the look of it too!

We very rarely see classic car interiors kept in this period, original and genuine condition.

The classic Corsair was a clever move by Ford to use the Cortina platform but move it more upmarket. Its distinctive Thunderbird-inspired styling allowed Ford to extend the Cortina floor by three inches. That gave the Corsair a sharp contemporary middle-class appeal.

It then added clever deployment of new sound-deadening material alongside double-skinned steelwork. It made the new Ford Corsair far more refined than the Cortina.

Try closing a door on each of those classic cars and you’ll soon feel the difference. The Corsair  package finished with a huge 11.7cubic ft of boot, which beat the Cortina and most other British family cars. It makes it superbly practical today as an everyday user.

The paintwork looks clean and bright and we are advised “without any rust”.

The pictures do not lie. All the doors, shuts and gaps are very good. Have a look for yourself in the image gallery.

The Corsair does have the odd classic car age related blemish, so don’t get carried away. It is after all a classic car. But that is our honest vendor just being straight.

Those Rostyles look new. They are not, just very good indeed. The rubber that surrounds them is new. Four new matching tyres were fitted about three hundred miles ago.

Our vendor, says some of the chrome work has “minor pitting”, we struggled to see it.

New front and rear screen rubbers have also been fitted.

Engine and mechanicals

The engine is Ford’s solid and sweet 2.0-litre V4 unit, fitted with a twin choke Webber nestling under that original pan air filter. How often do you see those still in place. The engine looks very clean and very tidy.

Our vendor is an ex-Ford mechanic. He knows his way around most cars, in particular Ford’s

He hasn’t done any major mechanical work, but he does tell us he has “been right through the whole car”. To the extent he described to us how he removed the entire handbrake cables, greased them all up and put them back together because he didn’t want the new owner to have them sticking on them.

Here’s a short list of things he has carried out. There is a lot more and if anyone would like to know he is happy to answer any questions.

  • Stainless Steel exhaust
  • 4 new 185 70 13 tyres on Rostyle wheels
  • New tyre on Rostyle spare wheel
  • New battery
  • New fuel lines metal and rubber, feed and return
  • Brake service and recent full brake fluid change
  • Full service and tune
  • Oil, air and fuel filters
  • Engine oil
  • Anti-freeze
  • Spark plugs
  • Plug and coil leads

The engine and gearbox haven’t been apart but they have been inspected. New fluid and filters are in the gearbox. It changes perfectly and the kick-down is described as perfect too.

Our vendor has additionally advised the following:

  • The car has had paintwork to the exterior, not sure how much exactly, I would say pretty much all;
  • Inside bonnet, boot and door shuts look original;
  • Underneath totally original, had no welding to be seen;
  • Wheels not original for that car, should be plain steel wheels with hub caps;
  • Interior carpet has been changed but the rest looks original;
  • Engine, gearbox and axle are original as far as aware;
  • All brake and fuel lines been changed; and
  • Spotlights on the front are not original,

Bottom line

Scarcity, condition and much originality. The Holy Trinity of a classic car enthusiasts search.

This classic Corsair hits the jackpot.

The experts at Haynes Publications estimate about 300 of these classics are left. The condition of this Corsair is the like of which we haven’t seen for many years. And then there are all those period features still in place. Not least of which is that cracking big bench seat.

You’ll be very hard pushed to find one that hits all three of those targets.

We all know where Fast Fords are rising. It won’t be long before Ford Corsair’s join the club. But the best news? For now they remain very, very affordable.

This is little bit of a reluctant sale. The only reason its going is because a Mk 2 Jag has just been acquired and space is at a premium. It is priced to sell and sell it will. Don’t miss out!

Vehicle Location: Burgess Hill, West Sussex RH15 – it’s the responsibility of the winning bidder to make collection / transportation arrangements directly with the vendor.

 Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s are worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at auction@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to ring you back and discuss, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important and we are here to help and also answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage bidders to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
