Fast, fun and fabulous. The MG Midget is probably the most versatile British classic car. High days and getaway weekends. Great for shows and events, and if you fancy doing so, you could use it all year round. Cheap to own. Cheap to run. It’s a proper British sports car with bags of character, bundles of charm and is sure to put a smile on your face.

Background

The MG Midget can trace its heritage back to the Austin-Healey Frogeye Sprite. The same fabulous classic car that brought sports car motoring to the British public in 1958. In 1961 the Austin-Healey Sprite Mk2 arrived, and with it the MG-badged Midget.

The production run lasted 18 years from 1961-1979. The final and probably the best evolution of the MG Midget arrived in 1974 with the launch of the Midget 1500.

History

  • This Midget was first registered 13th June 1979 making it one of the last of these cars to be built
  • Large history folder
  • Our vendor tells us; “the speedo was changed at some point in recent years as now showing mileage in the 90k’s and 2019 showed 25K”

Mechanicals

We understand the carburettors have very recently been serviced and properly set up by a classic car mechanic.

  • Twin Carbs
  • 1500cc engine
  • Four speed manual gearbox
  • Very tidy engine bay with various new parts fitted
  • Rear brakes recently serviced

The MG Midget mechanicals don’t get any simpler. Added to that, there is a massive owners’ club.

The 1500cc engine in the last-of-the-line MG Midget has bags of torque and pushes out just over 70bhp. That is more than enough to make for lively motoring.

Outside

This Midget stands out in its original Inca Yellow. You definitely won’t lose it at your next classic car event.

  • Replacement hood
  • The classic Rostyles all-round are in good condition.
  • Additional chrome sill covers
  • Optional chrome driver’s door mirror
  • Twin reverse lamps
  • Jet black sill trims

Inside

  • Sports steering wheel
  • Original black crinkle dash
  • New interior carpet
  • New boot carpet
  • Black seats
  • Wooden gear knob

The interior really is in good condition, unusually so. Even the driver’s seat, which generally takes a battering is good. Take a look in the Gallery. There is the nice addition of two analogue clocks which complement the existing original ones.

The MG Midget is at home blasting along B roads. The snug, sports interior suits that perfectly. Everything falls nicely to hand. You can blip up and down the short shift gearchange. The twin carbs and light steering makes the Midget a delight.

Summary

There is a reason the MG Midget remains one of the most popular classics. They are entertaining, simple and fabulous value.

Midget values have been pretty static for a while now. You definitely won’t lose money, that’s for sure. We are seeing tentative signs of prices creeping up as they become more scarce. The 1500cc Midget is one of the bargains of classic motoring.

A reliable, simple, good-looking, fun roadster. These are a delight to drive and easy to maintain. Whoever wins this auction will be walking away with a bargain and a smile.
