The Alfa Romeo Alfasud, type 901, 902 and 904. Or, by the name we all know and love it – just Sud.

The Sud is legendary. Flat-four engine mounted ahead of the front wheels. Sporty but simple styling. With joyful, playful handling that only an Italian car maker like Alfa can bake into the car’s DNA. It was that essence that made the Sud shine, and still makes it a delight today.

The apex of the Alfasud models came as the very last cars were rolled out in the early 80’s. The Alfa Romeo Alfasud 1.5 Ti Green Cloverleaf in the three-door version. What a car. And what a car this one is.

History

  • The first owner registered this Alfasud on 9th September 1983
  • A former owner put the car into storage in 1988
  • Our vendor is the fourth owner of this Sud
  • History and service books verifying the 53,000 miles
  • Original stamped Service Book
  • Original logbook
  • Additional receipts supporting the low mileage

Mechanicals

Alfa Romeo changed the game with the Giugiaro-styled Alfa. The Sud was an all-new car with an all-new powertrain built in an all-new factory.

The team were led by ex-Volkswagen and Porsche engineer Rudolf Hruska. It’s no surprise he chose a flat-four engine for the Alfasud. This configuration of water-cooled Boxer engine, front-wheel drive and a low centre of gravity resulted in a superb handling rocket.

The Alfa Romeo Alfasud had powerful four-wheel discs which were unheard of back then. The overall weight was low. The suspension consisted of independent MacPherson struts at the front but a clever, beam axle with Watts linkage at the rear.

Have a look in the Gallery and you’ll see how well the 35 years of storage has protected this Alfsud from the British climate.

This Alfsud is the Ti (tourismo internazionale) Green Cloverleaf performance version. It took the Alfasud model up several levels. This one, in this condition, is something else.

The engine was taken out and partially dismantled initially only for inspection purposes. It wasn’t found to be wanting. But our vendor is meticulous. While the boxer engine was apart it was easier to be safe than to have regrets later.

  • Engine rebuilt last year
  • New piston and rings
  • New crankshaft
  • Main, big end and small end bearings
  • New timing belt
  • New tensioners
  • New timing belt pulley wheels
  • New clutch fitted at the time of the engine rebuild
  • Electronic ignition fitted with distributor and coil upgrades
  • MoT’d in December 2022 with no advisories

Outside and Underside

The last models of the Alfa Romeo Alfasud Ti Green Cloverleaf version received several updates. They kept the Alfasud looking fresh and highlighted the brilliance of Giugiaro’s original design.

All those original features are present on this Sud.

  • Refurbished eight-hole alloys
  • New tyres
  • Rubber bumpers
  • Black wheel-arch extensions
  • Deeper sills
  • Rear spoiler

From the 80s on, the later Alfasuds used a different quality steel in manufacturing along with up to date, modern corrosion protection techniques. In some senses that is not relevant to this particular Alfasud. The 35 years of storage have preserved it wonderfully, as you’ll see from the Gallery. Take time to carefully look around the Sud. You’ll be as amazed as we were. One last thing, have a look inside the petrol flap too.

Inside

We genuinely cannot recall seeing an Alfa Romeo Alfsud Ti Green Cloverleaf in such original condition outside of a brochure image. There’s rare; then there is the genuine one-off. Take a look and you decide.

  • Spoke Alfa sports steering wheel
  • Seats with original ‘Ti’ logo
  • Rosso Red carpet

The door cards and arm rests are all good. The original dash with the ‘Alfa Romeo’ legend is undamaged by cracks or the sun. All the smashing Alfa clocks, gauges and switchgear are in good condition.

If you pay special attention to the Gallery, you’ll note the front screen still has the ‘Alfa’ logo stamped on it. The boot space is similar. It still retains the cubby-hole covers and fasteners.

One detraction from all the originality; it has a new headlining. The previous one had drooped a little and our thorough vendor wasn’t having that. We’ll forgive the little Alfa that.

Additional information

This is what our vendor tells us.

I bought the Alfa Romeo Sud Ti about a year ago. It had sat in a garage for 35 years, so went into the garage when it was only 5 years old. It’s only got 53,400 miles on the clock. The underside of the car is rock solid. The floor pans have never been welded nor do they need any welding.

Because it had been stood for so long, I decided to overhaul the engine, such as: new piston rings, new crankshaft and Conrod bearings, new timing belts and new timing belt pulley wheels. New clutch fitted at the time of the engine rebuild.

The interior of the car is in great condition. Also, the dashboard is in perfect condition and without any cracks. All the tyres are new. The car is fitted with a new modern electronic ignition. All the suspension is in is great condition with no rot whatsoever. The car comes with history and service book to show the mileage is correct. I also have the old logbook as well as the new style logbook. It has 12 months MOT.”

Summary

It’s not often we are lost for words. Make the most of it. There are possibly less than a 100 of these left in the UK. And probably only one like this.  The Alfa Romeo Alfasud is a legend. This last of the line Ti Green Cloverleaf model takes the Alfasud to another level.

Condition. Provenance. Rarity. Desirability. This Alfa Romeo Alfasud has it all.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at auction@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to ring you back and discuss, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important and we are here to help and also answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
