The classic Mercedes SL family needs no introduction. Timeless, elegant, classic grand tourers.

The R129 model began in 1989 as the previous boxier, squarer R107 SL ended. It was a massive step forward from the classic R107. The result was an immediate success.

Standing the test of time, today the Mercedes SL300 is a natural choice for those looking for a superbly engineered, reliable, open-topped grand tourer. It also has that special but indefinable factor that very few classic cars have.

History and paperwork

  • Documented service history
  • In the last 12 years it has averaged 1,600 miles a year
  • Recently serviced

Owned by our vendor since 2011 and used as a weekend car the time has sadly arrived to let someone else enjoy this wonderful convertible.  Original purchased from a colleague within our vendor’s shooting club, our vendor has spent 12 years enjoying the roof down experience that these Mercedes SL300s deliver.

Supplied with the hard top, which has been on a stand in the garage since it’s purchase, plus two sets of keys and a large list of previous receipts and MOTs with the most recent expiring in October 2023. A quick MOT history check shows a very impressive history with no signs of the dreaded body rust appearing as advisories or failures.  Very impressive for a 30-year-old car.

Inside

The interior is typical Mercedes quality, function and fit. And very luxurious it is too.

Other than the usual wear that is normal on the driver’s seat bolster, the whole interior is in good shape.

The distinctive signs of long-term good ownership are there – for example the genuine Mercedes floor mats – as opposed to Halfords ones at a tenth of the price.

This SL300 is well spec’d.

  • Cruise control
  • Electrically adjustable heated seats
  • Wood trim
  • Original Mercedes radio
  • The dash is damage free

All the door trims, carpet and switchgear are in good condition and work as they should, although just before the time of this write up, it was noticed that the electrics on the passenger seat had failed, although this is expected to be a fuse, that cannot be confirmed.

Outside

The classic Mercedes SL coachwork is remarkably straight although as expected there are a couple of minor blemishes to the Bluish black paintwork.  A keen eye will spot a very minor bubble under the paint on the driver’s side front wing, and a small number of car park dents here and there.  There are also a couple of areas to the plastic door trim and sills where the lacquer has peeled but a small amount of attention will put them right.

Being supplied with a decent hard top, which are pretty hard to find and will usually set you back the best part of a grand, our vendor has even made a stand for it.  The convertible roof is showing no rips or tears and has recently had the window section replaced by his local trim and roof specialist.

The five original Mercedes alloy wheels are in great condition and were refurbished back in 2020 with new tyres fitted at the same time.

Engine and Mechanical

The Mercedes SL300 was a major success when it was launched.  Some points to note about this lovely example:

  • Comes with an extensive history file
  • A new battery has been recently fitted
  • A new exhaust was fitted less than 2k miles ago
  • Distributor cap, rotor and coil fitted
  • This car has clearly been well looked after

The MOT history is a testament to that. Nearly all of the tests were passed first time. The few failures listed with the only failure in the last ten years being a track rod end with movement this was replaced immediately.

You could argue that these Mercs were the last of the “Over Engineered” Mercedes and it shows as this example, even with 161k mileage really does drive “like a dream” with no unusual knocks, squeaks or rattles.

Bottom line

This is a lovely car. It looks right. Drives right. The Mercedes SL300 is very sought after. It doesn’t guzzle fuel like the monstrously powerful V8’s, but equally it is no slouch.

Most of all, they are a fabulous amount of car – these were £65k new, with a three-year waiting list – and are stonking good value. We don’t think that will last long. But while it does, take advantage and grab a lovely example of this timeless classic.

Good luck! Please remember, our site uses anti-sniping software which ensures fairness to all bidders. So, if a bid for a lot is received in the last minute, the auction will go into a 2-minute overtime period for each subsequent bid.

Vehicle Location: Rainham, Essex RM13 – it’s the responsibility of the winning bidder to make collection / transportation arrangements directly with the vendor.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at auction@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to ring you back and discuss, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important and we are here to help and also answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
