With Ford funding, Jaguar was able to update the XJ40 into the classic it should have been. Today, the X300 Jaguar XJ6 Sovereign makes a practical, easy-to-own prestige saloon

The angular XJ40 proved just a little too modern for the company’s existing clientele. By 1994 a healthy dollop of tradition was exactly what Jaguar needed. However, the result of Ford winning the battle of ownership for Jaguar meant investment funds were tight. Jaguar opted to overhaul an existing model to provide a true successor to the fondly remembered Series 3 XJ6, creating the X300.

The Jaguar XJ6 (X300) benefited from Ford’s input into production processes. The output was a car which was reliable and properly assembled, as well as boasting big improvements in both refinement and equipment. The new model included the very good AJ16 engine.  In Sovereign flavour it boasted even more luxurious kit, better suspension, meatier steering and wood trim amongst other things.

History

  • First registered 20 September 1996
  • Family ownership
  • We’re advised by our vendor: his step mum owned this XJ6 first, then his dad, then himself

Outside

  • British Racing Green
  • Refurbished Alloys
  • Factory Sunroof
  • A simpler bodyshell constructed from fewer panels
  • New advanced anti-corrosion technology
  • The brightwork is clean and tidy

Because of the improved production processes, the later Jaguars like this fare quite well against the dreaded tin-worm in comparison to the previous models.

Mechanicals

  • 3.2-litre straight six AJ16 engine
  • 216bhp
  • The AJ16 stronger cylinder block and head, lighter valve-gear and a new engine management system
  • Sequential injection and coil pack ignition
  • We are advised this XJ6 has a strong service history
  • Four speed ZF automatic transmission
  • ABS system on sliding calipers

Inside

The X300 was the final Jaguar to have its seats and interior built in-house with the rest of the interior. That has proved them to be rather resilient.

  • Tan Blonde leather in very clean, tidy condition
  • New headlining
  • The Sand coloured carpets are in sound condition with over-mats
  • Maple veneer wood
  • The huge boot, complete with Jaguar sound system, is very clean

After some missteps with previous models, the manufacturer finally went back to basics with the Jaguar XJ6 Sovereign and got it right.

Bottom Line

A few years ago, you’d struggle to get a couple of hundred quid for a big old X300. Jaguars do this. Their value drops like a stone, then recovers and keep recovering. They then transform to bona-fide classics owned and loved by genuine enthusiasts for the Jaguar brand. The E-type is a classic example.

This is what Classic Jaguar Magazine said in 2020

“These days, of course, X300 is revered by many enthusiasts as one of today’s top modern-classic buys, renowned for its value for money as well as being one of the most durable Jaguars of the last thirty years.  It has a unique place in Jaguar history”.

The recovery has started. Good luck. Call or email if you have any questions.

Please remember, our site uses anti-sniping software which ensures fairness to all bidders. So, if a bid for a lot is received in the last minute, the auction will go into a 2-minute overtime period for each subsequent bid.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at team@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to ring you back and discuss, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important and we are here to help and also answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
