On the huge VW scene Mk1 Golf Caddys have a cult-like status now. Given the low numbers remaining, there is always a clamour of interest when one appears. We’re a little bit excited about this one to be honest. With its un-modified condition and low ownership, coupled with it being a very rare Sport model based on the legendary Golf GTi, we’re probably right to be.

Background

The VW Caddy first appeared badged as the Rabbit Pickup in the home of the pickups in Pittsburgh in 1978. In 1982 the Mk1 Golf pickup was renamed the Caddy and launched in the UK and Europe. They were sold in the UK up until 1992. Making this Caddy the last of the line models. During all that time they retained the Mk 1 Golf body and mechanicals.

At first, they were essentially a commercial vehicle and very popular. A production run of nearly 30 years saw 210,000 made, which is around about 3% of the total Golf Mk1 build numbers.

At some point, VW decided to fit the Golf GTi engine, a factory body and styling kit, calling it the Sport. It is unclear how many are left. Even more important it’s very unclear how many Caddy Sports are left in totally original condition.

  • First registered 15th April 1992
  • Two former keepers
  • Owned by our vendor for 10 years
  • Unused for a period of time

We understand from our vendor, Dave, who has two of these, that he took this one to Europe, where it effectively got ‘trapped’ in lockdown (hence the DIY lens conversions). He subsequently brought it back. The engine was turning over but not starting; investigations revealed jellified fuel. The Sport started and ran first time – with a clean direct supply and help from some Easy Start. Dave has since removed the tank and pump and that is where the VW stands today.

Mechanicals

  • 95 bhp 1.8 litre GTi engine
  • K-Jetronic fuel injection
  • Five speed gear box
  • Macpherson struts at the front
  • Leaf springs at the rear
  • 15-inch Alloy wheels
  • Also comes with the original wheels

It is quite remarkable to find one that hasn’t been ‘slammed’ with the wheels sunk up into the arches and a massive non-original engine bodged into the engine bay. This one is just how it came out of the factory, aside from having a slide opening window fitted to the rear of the cab.

Inside

Although it was essentially a commercial vehicle, the last of the line Sport models were trimmed out by the factory with pretty much car-type features. This is original too, with colour coded door trims and cloth seats. It is usual to see items such as the door handles and arm rest have collapsed. Just as it is uncommon to see the seats in this kind of condition. Look for yourself.

Outside

The Sport models came in Cashmere White with a matching body kit which included

  • Factory fitted decal set
  • Larger colour coded bumpers front and rear
  • Various factory option accessories were available
  • You’ll see this one has the bumper bar and side rail kit fitted
  • Factory bed liner

The front bumper shows a minor stress fracture on the curvature, which is not unusual and is a straightforward fix.

There is a good close up shot of the clutch cable and the bulkhead, because we all know sometimes the cable can disappear through that bulkhead. You’ll see that is all sound.

The most important bit is the tailgate. Careless owners often drop these down then stand and sit on them. This usually results in very unsightly wobbles and dents all over the large flat panel. Take a look at this one. That alone usually designates careful ownership.

Summary

A rare and remarkable opportunity in our view in several ways. Finding a decent Mk1 Caddy is one thing. Finding a Sport model with legendary factory fitted Golf GTi underpinnings? What are the chances?

Yes, of course, it needs recommissioning. But we know it runs. And we also know it has been with an owner for ten years who knows a thing or two about these.

The cult-like status and scarcity mean prices are rising on par with fast Fords.

The main reason this Mk1 VW Golf Caddy Sport is remarkable, is the remarkable reserve. Whether you are a Volkswagen enthusiast or not, this is a New Year opportunity not to be missed.
