The supercharged Jaguar XKR is performance, panache, and presence all in a superb British classic sports car capable of 155mph.

Background

The Jaguar Team knew they couldn’t stand still. In the early 90’s a team began working on a new sports car project. It had one of those funky secret code names. Both cost and time were project critical. To save both, the team retained and modified the floorplan from the XJS. They borrowed an existing rear suspension set-up from the saloon Jag, but added all new double wishbone suspension at the front end. Plus an all new 32-valve quad cam V8 engine pushing out 290bhp was popped under the bonnet. The first V8 in a Jaguar since the 250.

After launching in Geneva to rapturous press reviews, Jaguar didn’t hang about.

Just two short years later Jaguar decided to up the ante and in 1998 introduced the Jaguar XKR. The V8 quad cam in the classic XKR had a supercharger bolted on, giving the XKR a thundering 370bhp. The XKR in standard restricted form was good for 155mph. In (easily) unrestricted form allegedly the beast is good for 175mph, allegedly.

The super, Supercharged V8 runs well. It pulls hard and produces that fabulous sound that only a V8 can when its on-song.

Along with the crucial new items above which allow the new owner massive peace of mind, a new fuel pump has also been fitted

A virtual look under the bonnet, via our Image Gallery, reveals a clean and tidy engine bay.

With the sonorous V8 mated to the modern five speed ZF auto gear box, this makes the XKR a joy to drive.

Interior

  • New headlining
  • Ivory leather
  • Walnut trim

The cabin space has a light, bright spacious feeling. In true Jaguar fashion, the interior is a reminder of the manufacturer’s superb attention to detail. The good condition Ivory leather complements the  Sapphire Blue very well.

A prime example of Jaguar’s luxury touch are the front leather seats, which are both electronically adjustable and feature heated seat functions.

Both seats are in rather impressive condition for the mileage of the vehicle.

The driver’s seat of course showing slightly more wear than all the others but ignoring that, all the seats are good condition, with no splits, tears or rips. The rear seats, on the other hand, look like new, as a result of probably never being used. Having said that there is plenty of room, this XKR is a genuine 2+2 sports car.

Both door cards, carpet and all interior trim look excellent for their age. This is rare on these models. They can get a bit careworn, this XKR definitely belies its age.

As a sign of how this Jaguar has been cared for, the boot space in clean tidy and all intact. There disc player is still in place, along with tool kit, warning triangle and spare.

Outside

  • Sapphire Blue paint
  • Alloy wheels
  • Wonderful Jaguar Coupe styling

Italian style is often banged-on about. But Jaguar really did pull out the stops with  XKR.

Overall, the Sapphire Blue paint is in good condition. It you look closely in the Gallery you’ll spot the usual blemish here and there common on a classic of this type.

The lamps, which often become opaque over time are in good condition. The new owner will get the benefit of two rather expensive new tyres at the rear.

The alloys are in good condition.

Significantly, the MoT history is very solid. That matters because there is no evidence of the dreaded corrosion taking hold to the body structure. That is rather unusual on the XKRs. There is a lot to read-in to that.

Bottom line

  • Quad-cam V8 with 370bhp
  • Five speed ‘auto box
  • 10 years with current owner
  • Well maintained
  • Critical timing chains renewed recently
  • Good colour with a lovely interior
  • A genuine car

There are lot of XK8’s on the market. The XKR is on another level altogether. Even though they are much fewer in number, the condition various enormously. Talking to our vendor, looking at the images and seeing the care it has had, we have the strong sense this is a very decent XKR. If you’ve been searching for a nice one for a while, you may just have struck lucky.

Guide Prices?

We’re different. But you know that. And we’re always honest. In a sector where no two classics are same, how does anyone put a ‘guide’.

Well, everyone knows the broad value of classic, let’s all be honest. So we don’t need to tell you what you already know, do we.

The ‘market’ decides and the old cliché that ‘it’s worth what someone wants to pay’ is no less true. So why kid everyone!

But, because we are different, if it really does matter to you, that’s fine, we want you to be happy. Just drop us a line at auction@evoke-classics.com and one of us will be delighted to ring you back and discuss, it’s what we do.

Tedious but it’s vital you read this, please.

We will always strive to offer the most descriptive and transparent auction listings available. However, we can’t claim to be perfect. Your own analysis is very important and we are here to help and also answer any and all queries you may have prior to purchase.

We offer and positively encourage buyers to view, or arrange inspections for each vehicle thoroughly prior to bidding.

If we do take a physical, as opposed to a remote, look at any of the vehicles on our platform, they are not those of a qualified vehicle inspector or other professional. Nor do they include a test drive unless expressly stated.

As with all vehicles of a certain age, localised paint repairs are common. This specifically applies with classics.

So, please, unless we state explicitly to the contrary, please assume that classic vehicles on our platform could have had remedial bodywork of any kind at some point in its life.

Two final comments on images and photos.

The vast majority are supplied by vendors. Camera technology has and continues to improve significantly, but please note and understand that image and sound quality does vary. If you would like vendors to provide more images please ask us and we will contact the vendor for you.

If you are at all unsure, just ask us. It is what we are here for.

Finally, finally, finally. Please note that vehicles are sold as seen and a returns policy is not applicable. This is the norm for used items acquired at auction.
