Styled by Jaguar’s chief designer, Ian Callum, the second generation of the XK8 (X150) launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Jaguar turned perceived wisdom on its head and designed the 2nd Gen XK8 with a convertible in mind from the get-go. Appearing in Jaguar Dealers in February 2006 in both coupe and convertible guises, the XK8 was an instant hit.

Outside

Jaguar deployed cutting edge engineering in this XK8 by using Jaguar’s epoxy-bonded and riveted aluminium monocoque construction. There isn’t a conventional thermal weld in sight. This technique is usually reserved for aero-space manufacturing. The process increases structural rigidity by 30 percent aiding the pin-sharp handling. It also makes the XK silky smooth and noiseless by removing over 100kg in weight. The adventurous design employed by Ian Callum and his team included:

• Superbly integrated bi-xenon headlamp and indicator units
• Stylish circular taillights
• Chrome accents
• Alloy wheels
• Black folding roof
• Rear spoiler with brake light insert
• Keyless entry and starting

The rear boot space and aperture is hugely improved on the 2nd Gen XK8, making it much more user friendly. This XK8 is in the condition you’d expect of a low ownership, low mileage, well looked-after Jaguar.

The XK8 Convertible is loaded with safety equipment. One key feature includes a pair of rollover bars behind the back seats that pop-up if the vehicle is in serious risk of a rollover type incident.

On much more cosseting note, this XK has the optional wind deflector. If you’ve driven a convertible with one, you’ll know what a huge difference that makes.

There isn’t much that needs saying mechanically about a low mileage, one previous owner XK8 with a full service history, to be honest. We did find one thing though.

The engine and exhaust note have been factory tuned giving the XK8 a great sound that you’ll never tire of.

Summary

There is of course the fact that a proper sports car should come equipped with a big red starter button. Jump in. Settle yourself. Press that button and the engine snaps into life with a crackle. Slot it into gear, pull away and it purrs. Depress the right hand pedal harder and everything bursts into life. They don’t call it the leaping cat for nothing.

Low ownership. Low mileage. Full service history. In excellent condition. This XK8 ticks all the boxes, plus it is reserved very sensibly. These were over £60,000 new. They have reached as low as they are going to go. With the 20-year rule about to kick-in, the values are only going one way now. It isn’t down. You know you want to. Good luck.
